Popular Succulents
Succulents – popular and the perfect choice for the ‘Brown Thumb’
So you forgot to water your houseplants again. Even though you love your plants, they are showing the stress of summer heat and no water – and they are not pretty!
All home decorating Magazines show lovely, perfectly placed plant settings. They look great and add the finishing touch to any décor. You are able to do the same if you choose the plants that will thrive in your home and environment and your watering regime, whether too much or not enough.
Why not consider lovely draught tolerant plant settings. Succulents are becoming more popular for that reason. They can have an interesting modern or Mediterranean look depending on the type of plants and containers used.
Succulent care is easy, and succulent gardens and terrariums will brighten and add ambiance to any indoor space. They do not outgrow their space quickly and give a wonderful look without overpowering the area.
While some types of succulents have somewhat exacting care requirements, most are easy to grow because they evolved with special water-storage tissues that allow them to survive in environments that are too dry for most other plants.
Succulent Growing Tips:
Succulents like the dry humidity and warm conditions found in most homes, and while they like direct light, they can adapt to lower light. They all prefer a fast-draining potting medium that is not watered too often. Allow the soil to dry slightly between waterings in the summer. During the winter dormancy, keep the soil fairly dry. Remember at any time with Succulents – less is better than too much! As these plants are slow growing, they require little fertilizer. It is best to fertilize once in the summer with a balanced 10-10-10 fertilizer. During our Westcoast winter low light conditions, give them as much light as possible.
